Rubber and elastomer components used in automotive, machinery, appliances, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, cooling circuits and many other industrial applications are exposed to oils, fuels, coolants and process chemicals. Laboratory testing therefore evaluates not only mechanical properties but also changes in volume, swelling, hardness and other physical characteristics after fluid exposure.

Why Are Rubber Test Fluids Used?

Reference test fluids allow different elastomer formulations to be compared under controlled and repeatable conditions. Fluid type, temperature, exposure time and evaluation criteria should be selected according to the applicable standard, OEM specification and actual service environment.

  • Evaluating fluid compatibility of seals, gaskets and O-rings

  • Monitoring swelling and dimensional change in hoses and technical rubber components

  • Comparing changes in hardness, tensile properties and physical appearance

  • Standardized comparison in formulation development, quality control and R&D

ASTM- and ISO-Based Reference Fluids

Test methods such as ASTM D471 and ISO 1817 are widely referenced for evaluating the effect of liquids on rubber and elastomers. The required test medium should always be selected from the current test method, customer specification or OEM requirement. The term “ASTM series” can therefore refer to families of reference fluids used for different test objectives rather than one single chemical.

IRM 901, IRM 902 and IRM 903

IRM 901, IRM 902 and IRM 903 are standardized reference oils used to evaluate the behavior of rubber and elastomers in oil-like hydrocarbon environments. Different IRM grades are selected to create different swelling and interaction profiles for comparative material testing.

IRM 901

IRM 901 is commonly selected when a lower-swelling reference oil profile is required. It supports controlled comparison of elastomer compounds under standardized conditions.

IRM 902

IRM 902 provides a different solvency and swelling characteristic within the IRM reference-oil family and is used to evaluate elastomer response under intermediate oil-exposure conditions.

IRM 903

IRM 903 is one of the reference oils used where a higher swelling effect is needed for comparative testing. It is an important reference medium for seals, O-rings, hoses and other technical rubber parts exposed to oil environments.

Liquid F ISO and Reference Fuel Fluids

Liquid F ISO-type reference media may be used when required by the applicable test method or product specification to evaluate elastomer behavior in fuel-like hydrocarbon environments. Depending on the requirement, other ISO reference liquids, FAM-type test fuels or OEM-defined media may also be specified.

The critical point is to select the test fluid according to the required specification and to ensure that it represents the intended service environment.

Antifreezes and Coolants

Radiator hoses, thermal-management circuits, gaskets and sealing elements can remain in contact with water-glycol antifreezes and coolants for extended periods. Compatibility testing may therefore include concentrated or service-dilution coolant formulations in addition to oil-based test fluids.

  • Swelling and volume change

  • Increase or decrease in hardness

  • Surface deterioration, cracking or softening

  • Dimensional changes that may affect sealing performance

Other Test Fluids and Laboratory Chemicals

Depending on the application, rubber laboratories may use reference fuels, FAM-type test fluids, antifreezes and coolants, calibration fluids and OEM-specific chemical media in addition to IRM oils. Purity, composition tolerance, batch traceability and compliance with the applicable specification are important for reliable test results.
