ASTM D471 and ISO 1817 rubber and elastomer liquid resistance testing with IRM 901, IRM 902, IRM 903, fuels, antifreeze and coolants

Rubber and elastomer components can be exposed to oils, fuels, greases, chemical reagents, antifreezes and coolants during service. ASTM D471 and ISO 1817 are among the key reference methods used to evaluate the effect of liquid exposure on rubber properties under controlled laboratory conditions.

What Is ASTM D471?

ASTM D471 is a test method for comparing changes in rubber and rubber-like materials after exposure to liquids. As of October 2026, ASTM lists ASTM D471-16a(2021) as the active edition.

The method is relevant to items such as seals, gaskets, hoses and diaphragms that may encounter oils, fuels and other liquids in service. Its results are primarily comparative and useful for specification compliance, quality control and R&D rather than as a direct one-to-one prediction of field performance.

What Is ISO 1817?

ISO 1817 specifies methods for evaluating the resistance of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber to liquids by measuring property changes before and after immersion. The current edition is ISO 1817:2026, published in 2026 as Edition 9.

The scope can include service liquids, petroleum derivatives, organic solvents, chemical reagents and reference test liquids. Laboratories should use the current edition together with any applicable customer or OEM specification.

ASTM D471 vs ISO 1817: General Approach

Both standards evaluate how liquid exposure changes rubber properties, but the detailed procedure, specimen preparation, test media, measurements and reporting requirements must follow the selected standard. Test documentation should identify the exact standard edition and the exact immersion medium used.

Which Properties May Be Evaluated?

  • Volume change and swelling

  • Mass change

  • Hardness change

  • Changes in tensile strength and elongation

  • Surface deterioration, cracking or softening

  • Dimensional changes that may influence sealing performance

Why Is Test-Fluid Selection Critical?

An incorrect test medium can make an otherwise well-executed test unrepresentative of the intended application. Reference oils such as IRM 901, IRM 902 and IRM 903 provide different solvency and swelling profiles. Fuel applications may use specified reference fuels or Liquid F ISO-type media, while cooling-system tests may use water-glycol antifreezes and coolants.

Which Test Parameters Should Be Controlled?

  • Correct reference and batch identification of the test liquid

  • Immersion temperature

  • Exposure duration

  • Specimen size and surface condition

  • Fluid-to-specimen ratio and test-container conditions

  • Pre- and post-test conditioning

  • Calibration of measurement equipment

  • Acceptance limits from the applicable standard or OEM specification

How Are IRM 901, IRM 902 and IRM 903 Related to ASTM D471?

ASTM historical documentation identifies IRM 901, IRM 902 and IRM 903 as replacements for former ASTM Oil No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 respectively. This makes the IRM series an important reference family in ASTM D471-based rubber-oil compatibility testing.

Where Is This Testing Important?

  • Automotive and automotive supply

  • Hose, gasket and seal manufacturing

  • Hydraulic and pneumatic systems

  • Cooling and thermal-management systems

  • Appliances and consumer products

  • Industrial equipment manufacturing

  • R&D, quality control and elastomer formulation development
