How to Select Bearing Grease
Bearing grease selection should not be based solely on brand or NLGI rating. The correct product is determined by the bearing's speed, load, operating temperature, environmental conditions, and relubrication method.
Base oil viscosity and bearing speed
In high-speed bearings, excessively high base oil viscosity can lead to friction and temperature increase. At low speeds and heavy loads, a higher film thickness may be required. Bearing diameter and speed should be considered together.
NLGI class
NLGI 2 is common in general-purpose bearing applications, but NLGI 1 or softer products may be preferred in central feed, low temperature, or very high speed conditions. OEM advice takes precedence.
Thickener and heat
Lithium, lithium complex, calcium sulfonate complex, polyurea, and special fluorinated systems have different resistances to temperature, water, and chemicals. The phrase 'high-temperature grease' alone is not sufficient for product selection.
Relubrication amount
Excessive grease can increase bearing temperature. The correct amount and frequency should be determined based on bearing type, clearance, speed, temperature, and operating time.
Conclusion
The correct bearing grease is achieved by selecting the appropriate base oil viscosity, consistency, thickener, and relubrication strategy together.
